ABA'in karanlık
ve basık salonlarında büyüyen efsanesiyle New York Nets, bir
dönem kentte Knickerbockers ve hatta Yankees'in yıldızını gölgede
bırakmıştı. Uçan
smaçları, adam geçmeleri, feykleri anlatıla anlatıla
bitirilemezdi. Herkesin sevdiği ender yıldızlardandı ve yine
aşağıdaki videoda kariyerinin son dakikalarını seyredebileceğiniz gibi
deplasmanda bile
dakikalarca ayakta alkışlanarak uğurlandı. ABA'de
şampiyon olduktan sonra NBA'e geçmeye karar veren
Nets, aynı kentte 2. takıma
eski takımın onay vermesi kuralı yüzünden
Knicks'in vetosuna takılmıştı.

kendilerini geçmiş olmasına dayanamamıştı. New Jersey'e taşınmak ve
orada yeni bir salon yapmak zorunda kalan Nets ise elindeki en değerli
şeyi satarak kendini finanse edebildi. Böylece New York sokaklarında
büyüyen Dr J, Philadelphia 76ers'a satılmıştı. Nets, hiçbir zaman
ABA'deki kadar parlak olamadı, Knicks ise halen New York kentinin en
acı verici sembolü olarak  NBA'de...
Fakat, Dr J efsanesi halen ayakta.

'80, '81, '82, '83'de NBA İlk 5'ine seçildi; 77 ile 87 arasında
kesintisiz 11 defa All-Star'a seçildi; 1981'de
MVP, 77 ve 83'de All-Star MVP oldu. 1996'da NBA Tarihinin 50 En Büyük
Oyuncusu arasına seçildi. 1983'de Moses Malone'lu kadro ile Şampiyonluk
Yüzüğü'nü taktı. Finalde Los Angeles Lakers'ı 4-0'la ''süpürdü''ler ve
12-1 ile NBA tarihinin en iyi play-off kazanma oranı ile şampiyon
oldular. Philly taraftarları Fo-Fo-Fo diye bağırıyordu, yani her seri
için Four-Four-Four diye fakat Fo-Fi-Fo oldu. Sadece Bucks'a 1 maç
verdiler ve seri 5 maça gitti.
1986-87
sezonu öncesi bırakacağını açıkladığından o sezon bütün NBA
salonlarında Dr J'ye vedâ geçiti gibiydi. NBA tarihindeki taraflı
tarafsız herkesin sevdiği nâdir yıldızlardan biri olan Julius Erving
son kez gittiği her salonda ''Up Side God, Down Side Doc - Gökyüzünde
Tanrı Yeryüzünde Doc'' diye pankartlar, tezahüratlar ve gözyaşlarıyla
ayakta alkışlanarak uğurlandı. Kaderin bir cilvesi olsa gerek son maçı
Play-off 1. turundaki 4-1 kaybettikleri serinin Milwaukee Bucks
deplasmanındaki 24 sayı attığı 5. maçtı.
Those are the last few minutes of Dr J's successful professionnal
basketball career. This is game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference First
round between the Milwaukee Bucks and Erving's Philadelphia 76ers. Dr J
would end up scoring 24 points, but Charles Barkley's no-show (5/16
shooting) against a great Jack Sikma (18 points, 21 rebounds) ended up
being too much to overcome for the Sixers...

Erving, the great and wondrous "Dr. J," was the dominant player
of his era, an innovator who changed the way the game was played. He
was a wizard with the ball, performing feats never before seen: midair
spins and whirls punctuated by powerful slam dunks. Erving was one of
the first players to make extemporaneous individual expression an
integral part of the game, setting the style of play that would prevail
in the decades to follow. A gracious, dignified, and disciplined man,
Erving was the epitome of class and an ideal ambassador for the game...
He was the epitome of class, and no player was more respected.
Erving
began his professional career in the American Basketball Association
with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets. Widely regarded as the
greatest player of his time, he is often  considered to have
been the
main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. A 6-7, 210-pound small
forward, he also played for 11 years with the Philadelphia 76ers,
leading them to the NBA crown in 1983. In his five ABA seasons, Erving
won three scoring titles, three Most Valuable Player Awards and two
league championships. During his 11-year NBA career Erving was an
All-Star each season, the league's Most Valuable Player in 1981 and a
five-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He scored 30,026 points in
his combined ABA and NBA career; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt
Chamberlain, Karl Malone and Michael Jordan have scored more points in
the history of professional basketball.

Moses Malone
joined the 76ers as a free agent and teamed with Julius Erving, Andrew
Toney, Maurice Cheeks and Bobby Jones to bring the 76ers their first
title in 16 seasons... Malone proclaimed the 76ers would sweep through
the NBA Playoffs in "Fo', Fo', Fo'" and he wasn't far off as
Philadelphia cruised in "Fo', Fi', Fo'" to post the best winning
percentage in NBA Playoffs history at .923 (12-1)...
Moses
Malone. Armed with one of the most formidable and unstoppable
center-forward combinations of all time, the Sixers dominated the whole
season, causing Malone to make the famous prediction of ''fo-fo-fo
(four-four-four),'' meaning all the Sixers needed to do was win four
games in each series. In fact, the Sixers went four-five-four, losing
one game to the Milwaukee Bucks in the conference finals, then sweeping
the Lakers to win the NBA title.
