men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships.

Matti Breschel with Australia's Allan Davis... Italy's
Filippo Pozzato, was edged out of the medals
with three-time champion Oscar Freire of Spain in sixth. Belgian
favourite Philippe Gilbert, who came into the event in ominous form
after winning two stages at the Vuelta, made a bid for victory on the
first of those ascents on the final lap and opened up an 18-second lead
only to be caught inside the final three kilometres.

The 262.7
km course involved an 88 kilometre transfer from Melbourne before 11
laps of a 15.9 km circuit in Geelong featuring two arduous climbs.

Thor
Hushovd (born Grimstad, Aust-Agder, Norway, January 18, 1978) is known
for his sprinting (2005, 2009 Green Jersey Tour de France) and time
trialing abilities (U23 World Time Trial Champion-1998). He is the
first Norwegian to ever wear the yellow jersey as leader of the Tour de
France.
