We know that a solar eclipse, like the one that will be seen Sunday in the southern reaches of the Pacific Ocean, is a routine -- albeit spectacular -- product of orbital mechanics. It happens when the moon passes between the earth and the sun. * Hot Pagess The eclipse will take place in the South Pacific, starting from a thousand miles north of New Zealand, and ending at sunset in Tierra del Fuego in Chile and Argentina, according to NASA. It is the second eclipse this year, following one on January 15th. The eclipse will be visible over much of the southern Pacific Ocean, touching several small islands including Tuamotu in French Polynesia, Mangaia in the Cook Islands and Easter Island. Fred Espenak, NASA Astrophysicist said: ''One of the most unique things about this particular eclipse is that it crosses a unique and interesting archaeological site: Easter Island. On Easter Island there are these great statues... There's a lot of mystery about these statues, but in any case, this is the first total eclipse that's hit the island in about 1,400 years.'' End at sunset over the southern tips of Argentina and Chile in South America, including the town of El Calafate. The Sun's altitude is only 1° during the 2 minute 47 second total phase, but Argentino Lake may offer an adequate line-of-site to the eclipse hanging just above the rugged Andes skyline.
