At Indy500 Danica-mania...
Her fans had made Danica Patrick,
the most popular driver in the Izod IndyCar Series, a role she skillfully finessed with sex-symbol marketing to become a singular household name a la Tiger and Kobe.

The Danica Patrick phenomenon, America's
Dabica Patrick foto galeri Princess of Speed's rocky week at the Brickyard ended with cheers instead of boos.

The popular IndyCar driver, shook off a poor qualifying run  (''absolutely awful'' race car and said ''it's not my fault'') and a somewhat poor-handling car to finish fifth in Indy 500, her second consecutive top-five finish at the 2.5-mile oval.

Dario Franchitti drove 199 nearly flawless laps, then survived the last one with a huge break from a spectacular crash to climb back on top of the open-wheel world with his second win at the Indianapolis 500.
Two years removed from a failed try in NASCAR, Franchitti held on with a scant 1.6 gallons of fuel left in the tank - a victory made possible by a crash that sent Mike Conway airborne and into the wall, and left the final lap to be run under a caution flag. England's Dan Wheldon, the 2005 winner who closed furiously as Franchitti slowed to save fuel in the final laps, was second, and fellow Brit Alex Lloyd was third, followed by Scott Dixon in fourth.  Bookmark and Share

Patrick's steady performance keyed a resurgent run by Andretti Autosport on 30 May, as the team shook off a tough qualifying weekend to put three cars in the top 11. Marco Andretti was right behind Patrick in sixth. Tony Kanaan, who started at the back of the 33-car field, worked all the way up to second before finishing 11th. Ryan Hunter-Reay spent most of the day inside the top 10 before a late collision with Mike Conway dropped him to 18th.

FIRST LAP FIRST CRASH
Veteran IndyCar drivers Davey Hamilton, Bruno Junqueira and John Andretti all made early exits after running into trouble exiting the treacherous turn two at the 2.5-mile oval. Hamilton lost control of his No. 21 car coming out of the turn on the opening lap, spinning into the inside retaining wall with heavy damage to the right side of his car. Junqueira went out seven laps later when his No. 33 car got loose as he exited turn two and slammed hard into the outside wall.

The 47-year-old Hamilton was making his 10th career start at the Brickyard and his first for de Ferran Dragon Racing. He started 14th in the 33-car field. Hamilton was evaluated at the infield care center and quickly released.

It marked the second straight year that the race's first lap was marred by an accident. Mario Moraes and Marco Andretti collided on the opening lap last year.

Dario Franchitti took the lead from pole sitter Helio Castroneves shortly before Hamilton's accident. Andretti brushed the wall on lap 65 and sustained significant damage to the right rear of his No. 43 car. He had been black-flagged just minutes before for blocking Franchitti.
